The common term rod iron today refers to any mild steel that has the look of having been worked by hand. The term “wrought” actually means by hand, so the original wrought iron was iron that had been heated and then shaped by a blacksmith into fences, gates and other objects that needed strength as well as a pleasing appearance. Rod iron railing today is a term used for any ornamental ironwork.
